REACH restriction on diisocyanates comes into force

reach restriction on diisocyanates, precursors to Polyurethanes

Suppliers must comply with a new REACH restriction on diisocyanates, O = C=N-R-N = C=O, with R an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon unit of unspecified length. Diisocyanates can make polyurethane products, such as rigid and flexible foams, coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers.

Diisocyanates shall not be placed on the market as substances on their own, as a constituent in other substances or in mixtures for industrial and professional use(s) after 24 February 2022, unless a derogation applies. For example, mixtures with a concentration of diisocyanates individually, and in combination, less than 0.1 % by weight are exempt from the restriction.

Complying with REACH restrictions

Import, manufacture, placing on the market and use of any substance listed on the REACH Resticion List (Annex XVII) must comply with the relevant restriction terms. Affected stakeholders should;

  1. Confirm that a substance contained within their portfolio is listed in Annex XVII;
  2. Check that no derogation or exemption applies to their use; and
  3. Take action to comply with the terms of that restriction.
