Suppliers and users of 2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-ditertpentylphenol (UV-328) (EC 247-384-8, CAS 25973-55-1) should submit a REACH application for authorisation to maintain market access. The sunset date for the substance is 27 November 2023.

The chemical group of phenolic benzotriazoles, to which this substance belongs, are generally used as UV stabilisers since they can absorb the full spectrum of UV light. They are one of the most important UV absorbers, especially for transparent plastic materials.

The substance has the following hazards:

  • Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) according to Article 57 (d) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH); and
  • Very persistent and very bioaccumulation (vPvB) according to Article 57 (e) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).

The substance is used as a UV protection agent for;

  • Coating products;
  • Air care products;
  • Adhesives and sealants;
  • Lubricants and greases;
  • Polishes and waxes; and
  • Washing & cleaning products.

Additionally, this substance is contained in plastic products (e.g. food packaging and storage, toys, mobile phones).

Companies that want to continue using a substance included in the REACH Authorisation List (Annex XIV) after the sunset date need to prepare an application for authorisation, submit it before the latest application date and have a positive authorisation decision by the European Commission, unless an exemption applies.
