Suppliers and users of 2-benzotriazol-2-yl-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (UV-320) (EC 223-346-6, CAS 3846-71-7) should submit a REACH application for authorisation to maintain market access. The sunset date for the substance is 27 November 2023.

The chemical group of phenolic benzotriazoles, to which this substance belongs, are generally used as UV stabilisers since they can absorb the full spectrum of UV light. They are one of the most important UV absorbers, especially transparent plastic materials.

The substance has the following hazards:

  • Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) according to Article 57 (d) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH); and
  • Very persistent and very bioaccumulation (vPvB) according to Article 57 (e) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).

UV-320 is used as a UV stabiliser for plastics, polyurethanes and rubber. The substance is a constituent in formulations used for coating surfaces.
